ABOUT

Tucked away at the end of a no through road you’ll find a fleet of authentic American Airstream trailers waiting to greet you, each one equipped with comfy beds, hot showers, and those all-important glamping accessories… a fully-equipped micro kitchen and fridge. Reflecting the scenic views of nearby Brading Downs in their polished exteriors, the Airstreams are a genuine sight to behold.

These silver-bullet caravans once blazed a trail down Route 66! Each gorgeously glinting trailer was shipped directly from the good ol’ US of A, and they’ve been individually styled and furnished to evoke a typical American road trip.

Surrounded by beautiful countryside, our spacious 4-acre site is located in a peaceful, hidden spot on a small working farm.

The site offers a hard standing car park and plenty of lush green space to spread out. It’s the ideal spot to relax and unwind. The only sounds you will hear are birdsong and the whistle of the steam train as the Island’s award-winning heritage railway runs within 500m.

It’s not unusual to see Isle of Wight red squirrels, kingfishers, owls, woodpeckers, moorhens, rabbits and a variety of other wildlife in addition to sheep and cattle grazing in the nearby field.

The site is ideally located to enjoy exploring everything the Island has to offer.

Our aim is to bring a nostalgic happy feel-good vibe to your holiday in a chilled-out, relaxed environment.

HAZELGROVE FARM

Where you’ll be staying

The Retro Staycations glamping site is located on a charming 40-acre farm, just outside of Ryde on the North-East side of the Isle of Wight. Run by the Wheeler family, the current occupants are the third generation to be farming here.

Around the farm, you will see and make friends with ducks, sheep, lambs, pigs, cows and chickens. There’s also an area for growing vegetables and soft fruits.

Hazelgrove has its very own farm shop containing eggs, milk, bread, beef, pork and a wide variety of freshly picked vegetables available to buy at very affordable prices. Guests are also able to pre-order delicious breakfast baskets with locally sourced ingredients grown and reared here on the farm to cook and enjoy in your classic caravan. Please see the ‘Extras’ section in the checkout when booking your accommodation.

BACKGROUND

Why Airstreams are the coolest caravans in the world

As American as apple pie, their riveted ‘silver bullet’ styling is a design classic – quirky, fun and supremely trendy, Airstreams were the original trailblazers for boutique, glamorous camping. Their curvy retro shape and shimmering exteriors are unlike anything else you’ll see on the Isle of Wight. And as well as its good looks, the Airstream has a rich history dating back more than 80 years.

With a vintage appearance that better resembles a passenger jet from the golden age of air travel than a typical caravan, Airstreams are stunningly good-looking, especially on a sunny summers day when the shiny aluminium glistens and the light reflects off their curves.

It doesn’t end there. Airstreams are as stylish on the inside as they are on the outside.

Each of the Airstreams at Retro Staycations has enjoyed a complete makeover without spoiling any of the original 40s, 50s and 60s features.

Their original fittings and fixtures and have been lovingly restored to their original condition, with quirky, retro accessories. Their Habitat-style wooden cabinets are handcrafted, with rounded edges and chrome handles. They resemble a trendy, boutique hotel rather than a caravan.

Given their space-age appearance, it’s apt that Airstreams have a connection with cosmic exploration. When astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins arrived back on earth after becoming the first humans to walk on the moon in 1969, the first thing they did was head for an Airstream. NASA feared the Apollo 11 trio might bring ‘moon germs‘ back with them, so it was decided they should be kept in quarantine until they could be declared safe. Airstream created a ‘mobile quarantine unit‘ where they were taken on their arrival back on dry land. This famous photo shows the spacemen chatting with President Richard Nixon through the window of their temporary home. Since then, Airstreams have been used to take astronauts to the launch pad as they prepare for space missions.

Airstream creator Wally Byam’s dream in 1931 was to build a trailer that would be light enough to be towed by a car and provide first-class accommodation for people who wanted to get closer to the great outdoors. They were intended as a lifetime investment – indeed, we have classic caravans at Retro Staycations dating back to the 1940s so it’s hardly surprising there are Airstreams built in the 1930s that are still on the road today.

You often see these beautiful Airstreams on US film sets and backstage at Britain’s biggest music festivals.

A long list of A-list celebrities have owned Airstreams over the years. Actor Matthew McConaughey lived in one in Malibu for many years and eventually owned three trailers. Other celebrities who have owned Airstreams include Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Lenny Kravitz, Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington and Sandra Bullock.

Ronnie Lane’s Mobile Studio, also known as the LMS (Lane Mobile Studio), is a mobile recording studio originally owned by Ronnie Lane, bassist and founding member of world-class rock ‘n’ roll bands Small Faces, Faces and Slim Chance. A whole range of legendary albums were recorded by a rich mix of major artists in this 26 foot Airstream trailer – read more.

They’ve made countless appearances in films and TV shows, and even Donald Trump has got in on the act, challenging contestants on ‘The Apprentice’ to create a mobile business using an Airstream. More recently, an Airstream was featured backstage at Live Aid in the 2018 smash-hit movie Bohemian Rhapsody.

Read more about the history of Airstreams and why the air of mystique surrounding these incredible feats of engineering exists to this day…
